Red Admiral Butterfly

You’ve found the Red Admiral, a bold and colourful butterfly that brightens gardens and meadows while helping pollinate flowers and support wildlife.

More than just pretty wings: why butterflies are vital

Butterflies are some of the UK’s most loved invertebrates, with their fluttering wings and beautiful colours lighting up meadows and gardens. But they are also hard-working pollinators, helping flowers and crops grow by spreading pollen as they feed on nectar.

From the colourful Red Admiral to the delicate Holly Blue, each species plays a role in keeping our natural world balanced. They start life as caterpillars, grow into chrysalises, and finally emerge as adults in one of nature’s most magical transformations.

Why They Matter
Butterflies are vital for pollination and are also an important food source for birds, bats, and other wildlife. They are bioindicators, which means their numbers tell us how healthy our environment is.

A Serious Problem
A recent UK study has shown a huge decline in butterfly numbers, especially in the countryside. Loss of wildflowers, overuse of pesticides, and changes to the climate are all causing problems for butterflies and many other insects too.

Without enough plants to feed on and places to lay their eggs, butterflies, and the wildlife that depends on them are struggling to survive.

How You Can Help
– Let your garden grow wild! Even a small patch of wildflowers or long grass can make a big difference.
– Don’t pull out all the “weeds.” Plants like nettles, dandelions, and thistles are essential food for caterpillars and adult butterflies.
– Avoid pesticides that harm insects.
– Build a butterfly-friendly space with nectar-rich plants.

Fun facts!

Did you know?

Butterflies can only drink liquids, so they love nectar from flowers, but also get nutrients from puddles, fruit and even rotting flesh!
