A rare gem with a shimmering green glow!

The Tansy Beetle is a dazzling, metallic-green beetle that glows like emerald in the sunlight. It grows to just over a centimetre long and depends almost entirely on the tansy plant, which it feeds on and lays its eggs upon. Once found along riverbanks and wetlands across England, this species now survives mostly on the banks of the River Ouse near York.

At Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo
We’re proud to be involved in the conservation of this rare beetle by working with the Wildlife Trust, Buglife and by conducting population surveys in York, helping scientists understand where the beetles live and how we can protect their shrinking habitat.

Why They’re in Trouble
Habitat loss, riverbank changes, and invasive plants have made it harder for the Tansy Beetle to survive. They now exist in just a few small areas, making them extremely vulnerable to environmental change.

Why They Matter
Tansy Beetles are indicators of a healthy riverside ecosystem. When they thrive, it usually means the whole area is rich in life. Saving them also helps other animals that share their home.

How You Can Help
– Plant native wildflowers like tansy to support local wildlife.
– Leave wild patches in your garden to encourage biodiversity.
– Support organisations working to protect endangered insects.
